What is the Thailand eVisa?

  • The Thai eVisa on arrival (eVOA) can be obtained online and grants the holder a stay of 15 days in the country.

For now, tourists will still have to go to the embassy or consulate to get their passports stamped after the online applications but the government hopes to make the entire process electronic soon. It has already been introduced in China, France, and the U.K.

Thailand eVisa on Arrival (eVOA)

  • The Thailand eVisa on arrival is the original visa on arrival that allows travelers entry to Thailand.
  • The eVOA, electronic visa on arrival, can be obtained 100 percent online through a simple application form.
  • It is necessary to obtain the visa online before arrival in Thailand.
  • This eVisa for Thailand is available to citizens of 18 countries, including China*.
  • Once approved, the valid eVisa is sent to the applicant’s email.
  • The eVOA serves to travel to Thailand for tourism purposes.
  • The Thailand online visa on arrival grants holders a stay of up to 15 days.
  • Travelers can apply for the Thai online visa between 30 days prior to their trip to up to 24 hours before their expected arrival in Thailand.
  • There is an additional payment for the application which is being waived until the 30th of April, 2019. After this date, a fee of 2,000 Baht (US $61) may be required upon arrival.

  • This eVisa for Thailand is a new electronic visa that will be rolled out throughout 2019 for visa-exempt countries.
  • For the time being, the new eVisa cannot be obtained 100 percent online. Eligible travelers need to complete an online form and set an appointment at their local embassy.
  • It is necessary to obtain the Thai eVisa before traveling to Thailand.
  • The new eVisa for Thailand has already been introduced for citizens of China (February 15), the UK ( March 1), and France (April 1). ). It will be made available to many more nationalities in the following months.
  • Eligible travelers only need to apply for the eVisa for stays over 30 days. For less than this time, they can travel to Thailand visa-free.
  • The new eVisa can be used for tourism purposes only.

New eVisa Requirements

*China is the only country that can currently obtain a Thailand visa on arrival online and new electronic eVisa, depending on the period they wish to stay in Thailand.

Who needs to apply for an eVisa to go to Thailand?

Depending of your country of citizenship, the travel requirements and regulations may vary. Nationals of 18 countries are able to request an electronic visa on arrival for Thailand. The Thai eVisa on arrival or eVOA enable citizens of these countries to obtain a visa electronically prior to travel to Thailand.

Eligible nationalities will be able to apply for a Thailand eVisa on arrival by completing the Thailand online application form. There will be some basic Thai visa online requirements which applicants must meet.

Thailand Online Visa on Arrival Eligible Countries (eVOA)

In November 2018 Government spokesman Puttipong Punnakanta announced that as of December 1st, 2018, visitors from these 18 countries would have their visa-on-arrival fee waived for 60 days. This decision was made to boost tourism numbers from these countries. This was later extended until 30 April 2019.

Electronic Thailand Online Visa Eligible Countries

Eligible countries for the new online visa for Thailand (electronic visa) include France and the United Kingdom. This is the full list of countries that are exempt from applying for a visa for stays of up to 30 days. Travelers who wish to visit Thailand for more than 30 days will need this electronic Thai eVisa. Eligible citizens are required to complete an online application and make an appointment to get their passports stamped at the nearest embassy or consulate. In the coming months, it is expected that the procedure and application of this electronic visa will be completely online.

More countries will be added to the list of eligible countries over the coming months. Chinese nationals will also be able to request an electronic Thai visa, under different conditions and travel periods. Currently, the new electronic eVisa for Thailand must be obtained at the closest Thai diplomatic mission (Embassy or Consulate).
